London 2012 Olympics: US men's basketball team named - The Guardian

Five members of the gold-medal-winning lineup at the 2008 Bejing Games have been included in the 12-strong US Olympic men's basketball team.

LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul and Deron Williams return for another attempt at Olympic glory. The US team are favourites at London 2012.

The USA Basketball chairman, Jerry Colangelo, announced the selections after two US team training sessions in Las Vegas, though final approval is still required by the US Olympic committee.

"We projected we would have difficulty getting down to a roster of 12, regardless of the number of injuries that have taken place, because they are such an outstanding group of people and athletes," Colangelo said. "The final selections keep us in concert with our game plan to have athleticism, versatility and strong depth on our roster. I think our final roster epitomizes all of that."

The US team had been hit by a recent rash of injuries to several leading candidates, including Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls, Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic and the Miami Heat players Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh.

"We have benefited so much from having a pool of outstanding players who are committed, and as a result the selection is difficult," said the US coach, Mike Krzyzewski. "But it's the best challenge that you could have because everyone has been so committed."

Essex man a giant in fiber-optics field - Press Republican

ESSEX — Dr. Peter Schultz’s high-school guidance counselor told him he wasn’t “college material.”

But that didn’t stop him.

The Essex man, who became the first member of his family to go on to higher education, went on to invent low-loss optical fiber in the 1970s, with the help of colleagues Dr. Donald Keck and Dr. Robert Maurer while working at Corning.

“To this day, virtually every fiber used for communication around the world is based on that formula,” Schultz said.

But making a wire that advanced was no easy task.

“Nobody thought it could be done,” he said at his Essex home.

TINY GLASS WIRE

The challenge was to create a tiny glass wire free of impurities that would lose as few decibels per kilometer as possible of information as it traveled though it.

In 1972, two years after creating the original wire, the three scientists developed a version that would only lose four decibels per kilometer.

“It was a big improvement,” Schultz said.

Today, low-loss optical fiber, which is thinner than a single human hair, is used to transmit light signals that carry information sent out by computers, tablets, cellphones and other modern electronics.

HALL OF FAME

For his efforts, Schultz has received three prestigious awards.

In May, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the largest technical society in the world, honored him with its Milestone Award.

That recognition is given for outstanding achievement in the field of technology that happened at least 25 years ago.

The bronze plaque is mounted on a large piece of granite outside Corning Research Center in Corning — the lab where Schultz, Maurer and Keck did their work is located there.

With Maurer and Keck, Schultz was inducted into the Inventors Hall of Fame in 1993. Schultz received the National Medal of Technology in 2000.

He has a picture in his home that captured him shaking the hand of former President Bill Clinton in the Oval Office after receiving the award.

“I feel very fortunate to be able to do the things I have done,” Schultz said. “I absolutely never would have predicted this when I was a young guy.”

VIRGIN ISLANDS

Although he retired from his position as president of Heraeus Tenevo Inc., a technical glass manufacturing company, he wants to continue doing what he loves.

Since 2001, he has been taking on private consulting work for his own business, Peter Schultz Consulting.

He is also working on improving the transmission speed of Internet signals in the Virgin Islands, where he lives in the winter.

With Virgin Islands Gov. John P. de Jongh, Schultz was successful in securing a grant from the federal government to install a $100 million fiber network there.

“I only wish we could be doing that up here,” he said, acknowledging the lack of high-speed Internet service in the North Country.

DIABETES BIOSENSOR

Schultz is also involved in another project that could change the way diabetics check their blood sugar.

He is working with scientists in Israel and Russia to develop a biosensor that would measure a person’s blood sugar using fiber optics instead of a meter that draws blood.

“Recently, we’ve made some pretty good progress,” Schultz said.

LOVES SAILING

When he’s not in St. Thomas, Schultz spends his time in Essex.

He developed a love for the Adirondacks at a young age and moved with his wife, Mary Anne, from Atlanta to Essex in 2001.

Schultz knew the area from trips he made to the Adirondacks with the Boy Scouts.

“I always thought it was a pretty area,” he said. “It’s the back door of the Adirondacks.”

Usually, Schultz likes to spend a good portion of the summer on Lake Champlain on his sailboat.

But with all the work he’s been doing, he hasn’t been able to put it in the water yet.

“I just haven’t had the time,” he said.

Sunshine 'unlikely' for London Olympics - YAHOO!

Sunny weather in London is "very unlikely" during the Olympic Games which begin later this month, forecasters said after the wettest June on record in Britain.

Britain's Met Office predicted slightly better conditions for the month ahead than in recent weeks when torrential rains triggered severe flooding in parts of the country.

But forecasters said "below average sunshine" and temperatures are expected during the London 2012 Games which run from July 27 to August 12.

"Climatologically this is the warmest part of the year, but this year a protracted spell of hot, sunny weather looks very unlikely," the Met Office said in its 30-day outlook.

"In fact the inclement weather that has characterised June and early July will probably still be in evidence, although overall conditions are unlikely to be as bad."

Very wet conditions in southern England were more probable than dry ones, the Met Office warned, while stressing that the outlook for rainfall remained "extremely uncertain".

The forecast comes as heavy rains continue to hit large swathes of Britain where authorities issued more than 150 flood alerts and warnings on Sunday.

A man in his early 20s was killed in Northumberland, in northeast England, on Saturday after his car crashed on a rain-drenched road.

Meanwhile at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone 25,000 spectators were told to go home on Saturday because of flooded car parks.

Britain experienced double the average amount of rainfall last month, making it the wettest June since records began in 1910, the Met Office said.

The period from April to June was also the wettest recorded.

Celebrations for Queen Elizabeth II's diamond jubilee were marred by the inclement weather in early June but millions of Britons turned out regardless to mark her 60 years on the throne.

Gemma meets UK's most TOW-ering boobs - The Sun

The plus-sized TOWIE star came chest to chest with Stephanie Fox, 21, who carries round a pair of natural 32K boobs while on a evening out in Essex.

But although the night started off with the 31-year-old reality star looking fresh-faced and glam, it ended rather differently.

Heading home she was seen slumped in the back of a taxi alongside her current man and co-star James Argent.

Chivalrous Arg even helped her through the door — with a gentlemanly hand on her bottom, of course.

Arg later wrote on his Twitter page: "My poor @missgemcollins Bit 2 much 2 drink tonight! I've got 2 act my age instead of an 18 year old that I usually act like and look after her!"

Meanwhile, out of Essex, other TOWIE members headed to Wireless Festival this weekend and arch enemies Lauren Goodger and Sam Faiers literally kissed and made-up.

The two girls, who have fought over lothario Mark Wright, posted the photograph of themselves puckering up, although a wide-eyed Lauren didn't look quite as into the smooch as her co-star.

During the course of the day she uploaded a number of photos to her Twitter account proudly showing off her newly-slim body in a pair of tiny denim hotpants.

Sam, who donned a dark brown wig and baseball cap for the occasion, was joined by her boyfriend Joey Essex.

Back in the country after working in LA, former TOWIE star Mark Wright was seen sporting a new shaved haircut.

He posed alongside other familiar faces including Lydia Bright, Rochelle Wiseman, Frankie Sandford and Wayne Bridge.

Before heading to Wireless, TOWIE star Joey Essex was partying in Ibiza with old pal and former workmate EastEnders actor Tony Discipline.

The pair, who used to work at Billingsgate Fish Market before finding fame, left their other halves — Sam and 'Enders actress Jacqueline Jossa — at home while they partied.

The boys spent their time mucking around in the pool, pushing each other in and drinking champagne.

All the while, fashion-pro Joey kept his man-bag firmly by his side — only taking it off to jump in the water.

While not too far away was TOWIE's Lauren Pope who's been DJing on another of the Balearic Islands...and mixing with half-naked men.

The former glamour model later tweeted a photo of herself surrounded by the bare-chested cast of the isle's top tourist show, Pirates Adventure.

Lauren had just been to see Pirates Reloaded — a racy, late-night version of the family theatre cracker - and had a VIP peek at the muscles from Magaluf.

She gushed on Twitter: "Having so much fun at The Pirates Reloaded show, got to meet all the cast backstage aswell!"
