Early this morning, just after 7am, the A23 was blocked both ways near Handcross because of an overturned car. On the same road near the Southwick tunnel, an accident caused the road to be blocked westbound at around 7:15am with traffic backed up to Hangleton.

London Road in Burgess Hill was closed due to a falling tree on the A259.

The Environment Agency issued flood alerts for the River Adur, the River Uck near Uckfield and Ifield Brook near Crawley.

The River Ouse and the Cuckmere were also being closely monitored.

A spokesman from Sussex Police said: "Extra care should be taken when driving because of large amounts of surface spray on roads and fallen trees. There may also be disruption to other travel and outdoor activities."

Many mourn loss of Sussex teen killed at Surry graduation party - WDBJ7.com

SURRY — Family and friends of a Sussex County teen are mourning his death.

TyQuan Johnson, 18, was killed Saturday night after a graduation party in Surry County.

The Surry County Sheriff's Office said Johnson was caught in between two groups of people who were firing at each other in the 2100 block of Alliance Road.

Three people, including Johnson, were hit. The other two victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

"Everybody is taking this hard," said Irhonda Ricks, Johnson's aunt. "All we're doing is praying and leaning on another."

Surry County deputies said Johnson was hit by a stray bullet as he was running away from the shooting.

Ricks added that Johnson's mother is mourning her loss as best she can.

"She still has her moments," she said.

Johnson had graduated from Sussex Central High School Friday and was planning to attend North Carolina Wesleyan College in Rocky Mount.

Wanda Russell, whose son, Timothy Russell, played football with Johnson at the high school for about two years, was shocked by his death. She had encouraged her son to attend the graduation party where Johnson was shot, and now feels lucky that her son refused to go.

"I knew he was a good kid. I felt like a mother to him, as did many of the people who knew him from football," Russell said of Johnson. "He was always smiling and would do anything for anybody."

Russell also said her son and other students chose to go to school today to be where they knew Johnson and to be around people.

Sussex Central High School had guidance counselors stationed in the hallways when students arrived this morning. According to Arthur Jarrett, the principal of the high school, most students talked among themselves, but remained resilient as they went through their normal classroom schedule.

"TyQuan was very well-known; he was champion on the field and in the classroom," Russell said.

Ricks said there will be a vigil held in Johnson's honor Wednesday, but a time and location were not yet set.

Tributes were paid to Johnson on a Facebook page, "R.I.P TyQuan Johnson," where dozens expressed their condolences over his death.

There have been no arrests made in this case. Surry County deputies urge anyone with information to call 757-294-5264.

Masked rapist who went undetected for a decade is jailed after being trapped by father's DNA following fatal car crash - Daily Mail

By Daily Mail Reporter

|

A brutal masked rapist who went undetected for more than a decade after attacking a schoolgirl has been jailed for eight and a half years today thanks to a DNA match which emerged when his father was involved in a fatal car crash.

Jon Molt of Harlow, Essex, pulled a stocking over his face and dragged his petrified teenage victim into bushes as she made her way from a school Christmas concert.

Despite a massive police investigation, including a Crime Watch reconstruction, Molt thought he had got away with his depraved attack on the 15-year-old in Harlow, Essex in December 1997.

Jon Molt, accused of carrying out a brutal masked rape of a schoolgirl, was caught after his dad provided police with a DNA sample

Jon Molt, accused of carrying out a brutal masked rape of a schoolgirl, was caught after his dad provided police with a DNA sample

Police interviewed 139 men in connection with the assault in Harlow, Essex, and more than 80 DNA samples were taken from suspects – but the case went dead.

Then the case was reopened last year by the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate’s cold-case team.

When officers searched the national DNA database, they found a ‘familial match’ with a sample that Molt’s father, Frank provided in December 2009.

Frank, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving when he ran over and killed 71-year-old pensioner Jim Pritchard as he crossed the road in Epping High Street, Essex.

As a result of his arrest Frank Molt - who was later convicted - was required to supply a DNA sample and it was that specimen which showed similarities to that of the Harlow rapist and led detectives to the door of his son.

Jon Molt, now 34, was today found guilty on a unanimous verdict of a single count of rape following a trial at Chelmsford Crown Court, Essex.

Speaking during the trial, Carolyn Gardiner, prosecuting, said: ‘The probability of that semen not coming from Jon Molt is one in a billion. Members of the jury, just think what a huge number that is.’

The airport worker, wearing a black suit, white shirt and black tie, hung his head in shame as the foreman of the jury read out the verdict after 90 minutes’ deliberation.

Cold case officers believe that Molt - a married dad-of-two - may be responsible for a string of other sex attacks and are now hoping other potential victims may come forward.

His devastated wife, Katie Molt, broke down in tears as the verdict was read out and had to be ushered from the court room as she screamed:

'He didn’t do it.'

Mrs Molt - who lives with the couple’s two young children in a house less than two miles from where the attack took place - had defiantly taken to the stand to defend her husband during the trial, describing him as the 'love of my life'.

Judge Christopher Ball QC slammed Molt for failing to plead guilty to rape at an earlier hearing and sentenced him to eight and a half years in prison.

He said: 'By not pleading guilty it meant that the victim was forced to drag from the depths of her memory that which she had hoped to put behind her and relive it all.

'This sort of attack is every mother’s, every daughter’s, every woman’s worst nightmare.

'You were bigger, stronger and over-powered your victim and then had unprotected sex with her.

'You said during the attack that you had HIV which must have haunted her for months, and indeed years, after the attack.

'I have looked at the risk you pose and the harm you caused and need to send a message designed to deter others from doing this and to reassure the public.

'You must pay the price for a crime you committed when you were 20 years old.'
Molt was told he will be allowed to apply for parole after serving half of his sentence but will remain on the sex offenders register for life.

Speaking afterwards, Molt’s victim - who is now married and lives in London - spoke of her relief at the conviction.

The 30-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said: 'It is difficult to describe the sense of relief that I feel now that this man has been caught. Fourteen years is a long time and I was beginning to believe that he would never be caught.

'I am extremely grateful that Essex Police continued to investigate the crime and I would like to thank them not only on my behalf, but for any future victims of this man who will now never have to go through the ordeal that I have had to endure.

'Essex Police were helped markedly in their enquiries by having the resources to use familial DNA fingerprinting and I strongly support the arguments for the use of this technique and for the maintenance of the DNA database.

'I understand the counter-arguments that such a database may infringe civil liberties, but I would respond that if we, and our families, have nothing to hide then we should not feel threatened by the storage of this information.

'In random attacks, such as the one I suffered, there may be no other way of catching the perpetrator.'

The rape investigation - which had fizzled out - was one of the cases which was reviewed by Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate’s cold case investigation team after its inception in January last year. 2011.

Detectives believed there was a strong enough case to warrant extending the DNA search to familial links to see if there was anybody on the national offender data base who provided a match to the evidence taken from the victim after she was attacked.

It was a move which proved inspired and when detectives found a match to Molt’s dad’s DNA, they then asked both his sons to volunteer a sample, saying they were looking into an unsolved assault.

Detectives did not disclose that it was the rape which they were investigating and both brothers agreed to the request and Jon Molt then provided the direct match which had a one in a billion chance of not being correct.

He denied rape and a trial started last week.

The jury of six men and six women was told that Molt had approached the teenager as she made her way to her boyfriend’s house during a school Christmas concert on December 11, 1997.

Heavy rain brings more flood risks - The Guardian

The number of flood alerts has soared for southern England and Wales, with forecasters revealing there will be no respite from the rain over coming days.

The EA said there is a "continued" risk of surface water flooding from overwhelmed drains across parts of London, East and West Sussex, Surrey and Kent.

Some 44 flood alerts have been issued across England and Wales, with three flood warnings - the second-highest EA alert - in place for Barnham Rife, in West Sussex, and the River Mole in Surrey and West Sussex.

Further flood alerts are expected for the South West later amid forecasts of torrential downpours in Torbay and South Devon. There are no severe flood warnings, the highest alert, which mean there is an immediate danger to life.

The flooding has already wreaked havoc across parts of the country, causing the closures of roads and a hospital. Emergency cases at Worthing Hospital in West Sussex were diverted to neighbouring Brighton and Chichester for several hours overnight because of flooding.

But despite the heavy rainfall, the EA spokesman confirmed areas of southern England still remain in drought.

He said: "The rain we have had since the start of April - following the driest March for 70 years - has led to a huge improvement in water resources, putting us in a much more positive position for the summer.

"Water companies have seen reservoir levels rise, river levels are mostly back to normal, and many wildlife habitats that were suffering due to a lack of water have recovered. While the risk of drought with further water restrictions and associated environmental impacts this summer has reduced, the situation could deteriorate again next year if there is not enough rain this winter, particularly as groundwater levels are still low for this time of year."

Gemma Plumb, of MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said up to 25 millimetres of rain could fall in parts of the Midlands, East Anglia, central southern and south eastern England. There will be light rain through central southern parts of England, the Midlands and eastern parts of England tomorrow with some heavy showers across the rest of the UK. On Wednesday there will be further showers, the heaviest of which will be across Wales and south-west England.
