Kent says Canada went to Rio talks 'in good faith' - CBC
Environment Minister Peter Kent says Canada must stop the spread of "misinformation" on the environment by ecologists with an ideological agenda.
It's the latest example of strained relations between Prime Minister Stephen Harper's government and the environmental movement.
Kent, who is attending a United Nations conference in Brazil on the environment, said Thursday that ideology has tinged criticism of the federal government's efforts.
"There's been a great deal of misinformation and mischaracterization," said Kent, noting that he's not presenting Canada as a victim.
"I never like to associate with victimization but I think that Canada has been unfairly described as being outside the group of committed countries. We came here in good faith, we negotiated in good faith."
He suggested that environmental groups and competitors in the international market for natural resources "are promoting their own interests."
Kent said this is reflected in the criticism of Canada's policies.
"Ideology plays a role certainly in the criticism," he said, adding that he has a lot of friends in some of the more strident environmental groups.
"I recognize and appreciate their narrow focus on the goals that they want to achieve but in government we have to look at the broader picture and realize that jobs are very often at stake, the economy is very fragile in this economic recovery," he said.
"The environment, yes, must be considered and society's needs. We need to find a fine balance of these things and we have to remember ... that environmental sustainability involves a balance of the environment first but also the economy and society."
He said government has to respond to the so-called misinformation and communicate better.
The Harper government has been knocked by environmentalists for renouncing the targets for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions contained in the Kyoto accord and its record in general on the environment.
Kent said people should look at the government's policies for themselves.
"The Canadian media as well as the international media need to take a good look at our domestic policies and our, for example, responsible resource development as opposed to what some people are characterizing as cataclysmic to the environmental fate of the world."

Kanye West, Reggie Bush May Be Subpoenaed In Kim Kardashian Divorce: REPORT - Huffington Post
Kim Kardashian's divorce could be more entertaining than anything the E! Network has ever produced.
The reality TV star's divorce proceedings haven't even begun yet, but "the gloves are about to come off," a source told RadarOnline.
Earlier this week it was reported that Kardashian's legal team subpoenaed Myla Sinanaj --Kris Humphries' most recent girlfriend, of five months.
Sources told TMZ that Sinanaj has plenty to say about her relationship with the Brooklyn Nets forward and has text messages and emails -- including some that make outrageous claims that Kim's own mother orchestrated her infamous sex tape -- that could prove damaging to his fraud claims against Kim.
The Kardashian-Humphries divorce is becoming a chess game, with Humphries' lawyers now making their own move on the board, reportedly planning on issuing subpoenas for Kim's current beau Kanye West, and ex-boyfriend Reggie Bush. A source told RadarOnline that Humphries' lawyers hadn't planned on delving into Kim's past relationships, but everything is fair game.
Sources say that Kim's ex Reggie Bush could be dragged into the mess because there were reports earlier this year that she was considering getting back together with the Miami Dolphins running back, and Humphries' attorneys are curious to know what she told Bush about her decision to file for divorce.
And since the 31-year-old reality TV queen recently admitted to Oprah Winfrey that her current boyfriend, Kanye West, "knows everything" about her, it makes perfect sense that Humphries' lawyers would also drag him in to be deposed and possibly testify about their relationship.
"[Humphries' lawyer] has no choice but to depose [West]. Kim has publicly said that she and Kanye have been friends for years, and Kris' lawyers want to know if the two were ever intimate before they went public with their relationship a few months ago," a source explained to RadarOnline, but adds that Kris doesn't suspect Kim was unfaithful to him during their 72-day marriage.
Another reason the NBA player's lawyers are interested in West is that he appeared on an episode of "Kourtney & Kim Take New York." Kris' lawyers want to explore the rapper's appearance on the reality show and want to know what his involvement will be going forward. "Kris believes that Kim felt tremendous pressure to get married to him on camera, and this goes to the heart of his claim that the marriage is fraudulent," the source added.
Though there was much reported debate, it was ultimately decided that the upcoming depositions won't be filmed, and should take place within the next several weeks. Once both sides have been deposed, sources say a trial date will likely be set for later this year.
