CHICAGO, June 15, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Chicago Matrimonial Attorney Jeffery Leving (http://dadsrights.com) announced his support for a new Michigan law that expands legal rights for biological fathers.
This week, Governor Rick Snyder signed legislation into law giving biological fathers the right to parent their children, even if the mothers were married to other men at the time of birth.
"Governor Snyder is to be commended for recognizing the moral right of biological fathers to be parents to their own children," said Attorney Leving.
The new law makes it easier for biological fathers to challenge Michigan's legal rebuttable presumption that a mother's husband at the time of a child's birth is the child's father.
"Biological fathers will now have the right to file suit and seek a court order determining who the actual father is," said Attorney Leving. "Even more importantly, they will have the opportunity to secure a court-ordered DNA test validating their biological relationship to the child."
The law also modifies the Estates and Protected Individuals Code and allows for children to inherit the estate of their biological fathers.
The legislation will weaken the rebuttable presumption under a 1956 Michigan law that a woman's husband at the time she gives birth is the father of the newly born child. The presumption not only places the responsibilities and obligations of fatherhood on men who are not biologically connected to the child—it is also archaic and unconstitutional.

Kim Kardashian's Explanation For Divorce 'Leveled Me,' Oprah Winfrey Says - MTV
Oprah Winfrey's highly anticipated sit-down with the Kardashians is set to air on OWN on Sunday, on "Oprah's Next Chapter." Now, leading up to the interview, fans are getting some sneak peeks at what the talk-show host got the first family of reality TV to dish about.
"I think that's so ridiculous," Kim told Winfrey when asked if she ever feels exploited by her manager and mother, Kris Jenner.
"First of all, we have to hire a manager. So regardless, someone is going to get that [job]. No one will fight harder for you than your own mother," she said, according to E! News. "She knows us. She knows all of our moods. ... We just get each other. We vibe. It works."
In true Oprah fashion, Winfrey asked all the hard questions, including getting Kim to open up about her short-lived marriage to Kris Humphries. "Everyone who's asked was the marriage a publicity stunt? Why did she leave after 72 days? Her answer leveled me," Winfrey said on her Facebook page.
"Ok my friends I had the longest interviewing session I can ever recall, talking to ALLLLLLLL the Kardashians. I had never met them, nor seen the show," Winfrey blogged. "I did a full on Kardashian Kram in preparation, watching major shows from every season. I genuinely wanted to know why they have become a cultural phenomenon? Why do so many people love to watch their every move and why do so many others love to hate them. Are they completely ego centered? Are they really 'famous for being famous' or is there something more?
"I 'GOT IT' ... those answers + more," she added. "Those of you who watch the show know they hold nothing back. This interview I'd say was another level of forthrightness and honesty. Who surprised me the most? Scott. Lamar and Khloe. Kim."

Hospital bed murderer jailed for killing wife and mother-in-law - Daily Telegraph
"The attack on your ex-wife was pitiless. I'm satisfied that you were prepared to use extreme violence to get your revenge.
"You inflicted savage injuries on her in anger by stabbing and slashing her with the knife you had bought for the purpose.
"Not content with doing that, you then ran to Leamouth Road and finding Antonina Belska there, you killed her too."
Twelve days after the murders, Zolotovsky tried to commit suicide by throwing himself from a prison landing and was paralysed from the waist down.
This meant that, in what is thought to be a legal first, he was allowed to appear at the Old Bailey in a hospital bed.
A jury took just over half an hour to convict him of the double murder in March.
Today, prosecutor Zoe Johnson QC read a victim impact statement from Ms Zolotovska's brother and Mrs Belska's son Cheslav Belsky.
He said the family had suffered "indescribable grief" when they heard their relatives had been murdered "in the most horrific and merciless way".
"I don't know how I can describe my feelings accurately. I can only say they were feelings of abject horror, numbing shock and complete disbelief at such brutal and barbaric murders," the statement added.
"My father was completely destroyed by the news, he became entirely overcome by shock, stress and grief.
"The cruel and merciless murder at the hands of the former husband extinguished the lives of our loved ones, our precious and closest relatives.
"Nobody and nothing will possibly return them to us."
In mitigation, the court heard that Zolotovsky was angered that he was ordered to sign the marital home over to his ex-wife, whom he wrongly believed had been unfaithful.
Zolotovsky lay in his bed in the well of the court flanked by a nurse and an interpreter, showing little visible emotion.
Charles Bott QC, defending, said: "This was clearly a grotesque episode of destructive behaviour which had a specific and, as we saw in the trial, a clearly identifiable cause.
"What he could not live with was his own sense of injustice at the outcome of a court hearing two days before these offences.
"What he has done for lamentable reasons is to destroy three lives, including his own."

Wife accuses Frenchman of raping baby - Times of India
Pascal Mazurier, 39, deputy head of chancery, was allowed to go on Friday evening by High Grounds police, who said they are waiting for medical reports from Bowring hospital before taking the next step. The reports are expected at 11am on Saturday.
Police said they are awaiting the reports because matrimonial considerations can't be ruled out. They have booked acase under IPC's Section 376.
Denying the allegation by his wife, Suja Jones Mazurier, 37, an Indian, that he had physically abused their second child, Pascal protested innocence. French consulate officials were not available for comment.
Sources in Bangalore Baptist Hospital - where the girl was taken on Wednesday evening by her mother after Pascal allegedly abused her - said tests had confirmed rape; doctors had made 15 remarks about the issue.
"Medical tests have confirmed rape," said Nina Nayak, chairperson of the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights.
After the hospital confirmed rape, Suja filed a complaint with the High Grounds police station on Thursday. Police summoned Pascal for questioning twice. He repeatedly denied the allegation.
