Warning after killer flees London jail - The Sun

POLICE were last night hunting one of Britain's longest serving prisoners after he escaped from a high-security jail.

Murderer John Massey, 64, slipped out of HMP Pentonville in North London at around 6.30pm in what is his third prison break.

He used a makeshift rope to scale a wall and was not spotted in time by prison officers, sources said.

Cops went door-to-door in the surrounding streets after warders noticed he was missing and raised the alarm.

Residents said officers were carrying the lifer's photo and told them to stay inside as he could be "dangerous".

Scotland Yard added: "He should not be approached."

Massey has spent more than 35 years behind bars for the murder of nightclub bouncer Charlie Higgins in 1975.

He gunned him down with a sawn-off shotgun at a pub in Hackney, East London.

The Prison Service has launched an investigation into how Massey could escape. He was initially released on parole in June 2007 after spending the last 18 months of his sentence in an open prison.

He was ordered to live in a bail hostel in Streatham, South London, under a curfew. But he ended up breaking the curfew and spent a few days with his dying dad.

Massey was immediately recalled to prison before being sent to another open jail 2½ years later.

He reportedly walked out after hearing his sister was gravely ill and was arrested ten months later and taken to Pentonville.

Anyone with information about Massey’s whereabouts is asked to call Islington Police on 020 7421 0296, or people can inform Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Erratic leaker too busy boning up on Ecuadorian anthem

WikiLeaker-in-chief Julian Assange was served with an extradition notice by the Metropolitan police this morning.

Scotland Yard said that the 40-year-old Australian, who holed himself up in the Ecuadorian Embassy's digs in London a week ago in an effort to seek political asylum, was required to "attend a police station at date and time of our choosing".

Before adding: "This is standard practice in extradition cases and is the first step in the removal process."

As we reported last week, Assange's bizarre plea for shelter from being extradited to Sweden to face allegations of coercion, sexual molestation and rape meant that he had broken one of the conditions of his UK bail terms, which had been in force since his arrest in December 2010.

He had been cuffed, courtesy of a European Arrest Warrant, by the Met's extradition unit on behalf of Swedish authorities.

By taking up residence in the Ecuadorian Embassy's flat in Knightsbridge, London, the computer hacker broke a curfew set out by Scotland Yard, which demanded that Assange remain holed up at his bail address between the hours of 22.00 and 8.00.

The moment he steps outside the door, Assange will be re-arrested under the Bail Act by police officers currently camped outside the embassy.

Scotland Yard said today that Assange "remains in breach of his bail conditions, failing to surrender would be a further breach of conditions and he is liable to arrest".

Meanwhile, Ecuador has yet to respond to Assange's diplomatic plight. ®

‘Our daughter and granddaughter have been taken from us in such a tragic and horrific way.

'We can't begin to explain how we feel.

‘Eystna was a wonderful and loving daughter who was looking forward to the birth of her first child.

‘Sadly this will no longer be. We hope that everyone will understand the sadness in our hearts and let us mourn our sadness of the passing of our loved ones.

‘We would also like to thank everyone for their support to our family at this very sad time.’

Today friends told how the young mum-to-be was excited about the birth of her first child, due later this week, before she was discovered with fatal injuries near to Howard Way in Harlow, Essex.

Detectives initially said the death was being treated as unexplained but following the results of a post mortem, it is now being treated as murder.

The horrific nature of the attack at around 3am on Wednesday morning has shocked and upset residents in the area who have laid floral tributes at a bench near to where her body was found.

One of her best friends Chloe Hickman, 20, said: ‘It’s a terrible and wicked thing to happen to such a lovely, bubbly girl.

‘Eystna was such a popular and positive person and was due to be induced at the weekend.

‘She was really looking forward to becoming a mum.’

The young mum-to-be had studied catering at nearby Harlow College and had been excited about life as a full-time mother.

One of Eystna’s close friends Charlotte Bird wrote on Facebook: ‘Hates that I’m gonna go bed tonight and not sleep a wink but all I will be thinking bout are my 2 Beautiful darling Angels tonight who are at peace and now out of trouble sleep tight princesses.’

As she excitedly counted down the days she spoke of the father of her baby, who is believed to be the suspect, not wanting the child and having a new partner.

Describing herself on her profile page Eystna said: ‘I’m 20yrs old 21yrs old this year and going to be a mummy soon can’t wait.

‘So if you have any problems with me or my ex then im not interested as im an adult unlike some of you.’

London’s Emirates Air Line cable car service launches - Daily Telegraph

The journey itself begins when you board one of the slow-moving cabins at either station. We travelled first from Emirates Greenwich Peninsula to Emirates Royal Docks and faced London City Airport, Royal Victoria Dock and the Thames Barrier. Anyone who’s sensitive to heights may find the journey in the glass-fronted carriages daunting, particularly during the ascent when we experienced slight wobbles, and when they pass directly under the helix towers and shudder and tremble. We docked with a slight bump and a hesitant passenger travelling with us found those moments “petrifying”; for everyone else the journey was unproblematic.

Our return journey was more impressive, with views of the O2, Canary Wharf, the City, Greenwich and the Shard all stretched out before us – if you’re only going to use the service once ensure you travel in this direction. More curious members of our party stood up to take photographs and were reprimanded by an automated announcement telling them to remain seated and reminding passengers that they are being observed by CCTV. Random passenger searches will also be in operation and travellers’ bags may also be checked on occasion. Stickers within the cabin also instruct passengers to refrain from rocking the carriage, wedging its doors open, attempting to stick their legs out the doors, lighting matches and waving enthusiastically from open windows.

What not to do when travelling by Emirates Air Line cable car.

The Emirates Air Line cable car is now open and will operate from 7am-9pm Monday to Friday; 8am-9pm Saturday and 9am-9pm Sunday. Opening hours will be extended when events take place locally and during the Olympics period.

A Diplomatic Divorce is the Only Way to Go - Forbes

In an ideal world, all weddings would result in fairytale marriages and happy endings. No one would ever disagree, cheat, grow apart, lie or lose interest, and divorces would never happen. Of course, that world does not exist.

Divorce is an unfortunate reality of life for many people. It’s not always a bad thing. People grow, mature and grow apart over time, and some marriages cannot sustain these changes. For some people, the divorce is sudden and unexpected; for others, it’s a slow process of marital decay until the separation is inevitable. No matter why the marriage fell apart, the divorce itself is bound to be an emotional period that’s difficult for all parties involved.

Some things will make the process easier for everyone, however, especially if there are children in the mix. By setting aside the hurt feelings and working through the practical aspects of getting the divorce finalized, you can both move on with your lives as quickly and painlessly as possible.

What is an Amicable Divorce?

For people in the throes of a divorce, it may seem anything but amicable. Many separations are preceded by months or even years of arguing, blame-placing, lies or other major issues. Even people who end a relationship on generally good terms may still feel hurt and overwhelmed, and it can be hard to see the divorce clearly and objectively.

An amicable divorce is one where both parties can agree to terms of spousal support, child support, custody and the division of assets without needing a judge to make those decisions for you. An amicable divorce is always uncontested, meaning both parties agree that the marriage is over and are willing to work toward bringing it to a peaceful resolution.

In understanding a diplomatic divorce, it may be helpful to understand what it’s not:

– It doesn’t mean that you’ll both be friends. Although some divorcees are able to maintain friendships with their exes, this is not the norm (certainly not the level of friendship as before) and it’s not something that you should expect.

– It doesn’t mean that the divorce will be painless. You have the right to grieve for the loss of your marriage, and nothing can take that right away from you. Approaching the divorce with a clear head will simply help resolve it quickly and without adding more pain.

– It doesn’t mean that you’ll get everything you want. A diplomatic divorce is fair, which means both sides will come out mostly even. Neither party really “wins” a divorce, so don’t expect to leave the proceedings feeling triumphant.

Once you understand what an amicable divorce really is, it becomes easier to see why it’s the best choice. If you can, you should always strive to end your marriage on a diplomatic note; this is doubly important if you have children and plan to share custody.

Why Get a Diplomatic Divorce?

London Could Stage Formula 1 Grand Prix - Sky.com

Formula One’s billionaire chief executive Bernie Ecclestone has offered to pay more than £35m to stage a grand prix in London.

Plans for a route around some of London’s most famous landmarks - including Buckingham Palace and Trafalgar Square - are to be unveiled later today.

It would be the biggest grand prix motor race in the world, and experts believe that as many as 120,000 spectators would watch the race from grandstands on the 3.2-mile route.

The event could generate as much as £100m in spending for the London economy.

The idea for a London street race came from British sponsor Santander.

Mr Ecclestone said that he was prepared to promote the race, which is likely to be staged in the summer, with Formula One picking up the bill.

Previous attempts to stage the grand prix in London have fallen flat, when politicians balked at the possible cost.

The route would take in some of London's most famous landmarks

Governments elsewhere in the world have been charged up to £30m to stage a grand prix race.

Mr Ecclestone believes the event would be so popular that it would pay for itself.

“Think what it would do for tourism. It would be fantastic, good for London, good for England - a lot better than the Olympics,” he said.

Nigel Currie, the director of the sports marketing agency brandRapport, said the grand prix could represent a "commercial bonanza" for the capital.

"A successful London Olympics will show that there is an appetite for big events and bringing a grand prix to the people on their doorstep will attract massive attention."

A study by global design practice Populous has examined the feasibility of staging a London grand prix.

Assistant principal John Rhodes said the event would not cause major disruption, taking five days to set up equipment and three to dismantle it.

Firefighters across Essex walked out on strike at 10am this morning in protest against cuts to frontline service across the county.

The eight hour action was the first of five strikes announced by the FBU union in their long-running dispute with Essex fire authority.

FBU general secretary Matt Wrack joined strikers outside Brentwood fire station this morning. The station is threatened with losing one of its full-time fire engines.

“Were fighting cuts to fire services all over the countryand for us, Essex is the front line,” he told Socialist Worker. The FBU is calling a demonstration against fire service cuts in Essex on 18 July, he added.

Essex fire authority is cutting frontline services despite a lack of budget cuts over all. Some 100 full-time and 60 part-time posts have been axed in the county since 2008.

Service

Nick Mayes is Essex FBUs assistant secretary and has worked as a firefighter at Brentwood for over 25 years. “The management think they can provide the same level of service with fewer firefighters,” he told Socialist Worker.

“Were saying thats an impossibility. You can have as many fire engines as you wantwithout firefighters to crew them theyre just sitting pretty.”

This situation isnt confined to Essex, said Matt Wrack. “There are a few fire authorities that are building their reserves and still making cuts. Essex is not the only one.”

The fire authority should be scrutinising the plans put forward by senior managers rather than simply rubberstamping them, Nick Mayes added.

Job cuts for frontline firefighters coincide with what one striker described as a “corporate expansion” by the fire authorityplush new headquarters, bloated IT budgets, flash cars for senior officers. “You get a similar thing in all public services,” Nick noted.

The management response to the strike has been heavy-handed. Firefighters have been banned from holding union meetings on fire service premises or setting foot on them while on strike. There have also been persistent threats of disciplinary action against strikers from management.

The next strike dates are set for 7 July, 18 July, 18 August and 18 October. The 18 July strike, which coincides with the Essex demo, is scheduled to last for 24 hours.

(Financial Press) Essex Angel Capital: Public Company Exposure To High Growth Private Companies - YAHOO!

Essex Angel Capital introduces an innovative business model that allows investors to benefit from the growth of emerging private companies via a publicly traded common stock.

Windsor, ON (PRWEB) June 28, 2012

VANCOUVER July 28, 2012 (Financial Press) Essex Angel Capital is a company with an innovative business model that allows investors to benefit from the growth of emerging private companies via a publicly traded common stock. Typically, private companies are unavailable to new investors unless they are included in the original funding ,very close to the management team or are a limited partner in a Venture Capital Fund. Those private company investors are then usually offered very little in the way of liquidity to sell their shares and are subject to dilution in follow-on funding rounds common in high growth early stage companies.

Essex offers the liquidity of a public stock combined with the high growth potential of early stage venture investing. Having completed its qualifying transaction as of last July in 2011, the company is now well on its way to many ground breaking developments via advancement of products they have in their portfolio of private investments. In a press release issued April 13th, 2012, Essex entered an option to acquire up to 60%, adding 40% to its current 19% position in one of the company’s portfolio investments, Wellness Indicators Inc.

Wellness Indicators, Inc. is a private company based in Wauconda, Illinois which develops, manufactures and markets a dry urinary wellness test strip called The Health EquaterTM Assessment Profile to employers, insurers and governments. The Health EquaterTM provides a personalized client report and gives individuals the opportunity to optimize their health and help identify potential future health risks.

Although it is not diagnostic for any specific disease, the Health Equater has been likened to a “check engine light” in a car because results can be elevated in response to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, autoimmune disorders cancer, and more . “The Health EquaterTM” does all of this at a very efficient price point, delivers results in 5 minutes and fits into the wellness programs of most large employers, health insurers and labor unions.

The retail cost of the Health EquaterTM test is about $30 US and is a viable product for insurers’ to utilize for the assessment and improvement to the insured’s wellness. Having a vast market of 90 million plus people under wellness coverage issued by insurers, the Health Equater is very attractive option to an extremely large group of potential customer groups such as major insurance companies, large employers and labor unions. The potential for growth is strong as this could be used in many other applications, opening a gigantic marketplace to both Wellness Indicators Inc. and subsequently Essex and its shareholders.

Essex Angel Capital announced on June 15th that it has signed a binding letter agreement with Wellness Indicators, Inc., whereby Wellness agreed to grant Essex a quarterly royalty of 2.0% of the gross sales of Wellness in each fiscal quarter. Wellness and the Corporation will enter into a definitive royalty agreement within 20 days of the date hereof. The definitive agreement shall terminate on the date that Wellness completes a liquidity event. Additionally, Essex agreed to acquire a minimum of US$100,000 and up to US$1,000,000 of 6.0% principal amount of secured convertible debentures of Wellness. The Wellness Debentures will be convertible into shares of voting stock of Wellness at a price of US$1.00 per Share for a period of four years from the issuance date. The grant of the Royalty is subject to Essex acquiring a minimum of US$100,000 principal amount of Wellness Debentures. This is another example of Essex unique investing methods of creating returns while a company is in its high growth stages.

Commenting on the furthered investment from Essex Angel, Frank Lyman, President & CEO of Wellness Indicators remarked: “We are very pleased with the proposed Essex transaction as they have been a strategic and valuable investor to Wellness since their first investment. The Health Equater wellness test is a game changer that we believe fills an unmet need in the wellness services market. We already have large potential clients waiting to buy the product and incorporate it into their mix of wellness initiatives. We are eager to launch our full-scale sales efforts.”

“From our initial investment last year to the follow-up funding of the clinical trials to this latest infusion of investment cash, our goal has been to see Wellness Indicators through to full commercialization . The shared royalty on gross sales offers participating Essex investors the potential for returns as soon as the product hits the market ” reported Rick Galdi, CEO & President of Essex Angel Capital.

This unique noninvasive test panel is not only an industry first, but offers important information to individuals and their insurers about their wellness while potentially removing significant costs from the healthcare system. The Health EquaterTM not only addresses a great market need, it also has a solid intellectual property portfolio with the potential for application in more cutting-edge tests in the future.

We make up the law as we go along, admits Britain's new Euro-judge - Daily Telegraph Blogs

We make up the law as we go along, admits Britain's new Euro-judge - Daily Telegraph Blogs

A court with a mission is a menace, a supreme court with a mission is a tyranny

Think of some of the more bizarre interpretations that have come out of the European Court of Human Rights. How does the ‘right to a family life’ allow illegal immigrants to defy deportation orders? How did ‘freedom of expression’ come to encompass pornography in prison cells? How does the prohibition of torture mean that a state can’t repatriate foreigners to places where they won’t be tortured, but someone else might have been?

Whatever the rights and wrongs of such rulings, they are plainly political rather than legal. You can make a case that, for example, felons should not lose the right to vote. But if that is your view, you should stand for election and seek to alter the legislation. The objection to the ECHR is not that all its judgments are idiotic – though some of them are – but that it is behaving as a legislative rather than a judicial body, ruling on the basis of what it thinks the law ought to say rather than what it says.

One of the reasons it does so is that it isn’t staffed by judges – not, at least, as we understand the term. Like its cousin, the European Court of Justice, it doesn’t require its members to have served on the bench in their home countries. Many of them are academics, politicians and human rights activists who happen to have law degrees. And some are quite blatant about using the institution to advance an agenda that would be rejected at the ballot box.

Consider Britain’s new representative, Paul Mahoney. James Slack describes him as ‘A Eurocrat who has never been a judge in Britain’: for 30 years, he has worked within the Strasbourg system.

Like his predecessor, Sir Nicolas Bratza – though in more measured words – he cheerfully admits that the ECHR makes things up as it goes along: ‘The open textured language and the structure of the Convention leave the Court significant opportunities for choice in interpretation. In exercising that choice, particularly when faced with changed circumstances and attitudes in society, the Court makes new law.’

Changed attitudes, eh? As defined by whom? Not, obviously, by the electorate as a whole, or the law would have been altered. But you, the ECHR, somehow have a direct connection with ‘attitudes in society’ that elected representatives have not? And you’re absolutely certain that these attitudes represent society as a whole, not just the opinions you get from Guardian leader-writers and Matrix Chambers activists?

The odd thing is that the autocracies which were defeated in 1945, and whose re-emergence the ECHR was supposed to prevent, likewise justified themselves by arguing that they had a better sense of the people’s welfare than a parliamentary system would produce. The whole purpose of representative government is to ensure that our rulers don’t get to decide, on their own, what’s good for us. It’s hard to improve on C.S. Lewis:

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

London wants music to rock the Games, not wreck them - Reuters UK

London wants music to rock the Games, not wreck them - Reuters UK

LONDON | Wed Jun 27, 2012 5:48pm BST

LONDON (Reuters) - Spectators worried that a once-in-a-lifetime London Olympic experience could be ruined by canned music, intrusive presenters or deafening rock anthems should rest easy, organisers said on Wednesday.

Their aim is to 'Rock the Games', not wreck them. To educate, not irritate.

Unveiling a tailored audio-visual concept on Wednesday, including a music programme with an official track by chart-toppers Muse and new work by top artists, organisers pledged to plug in to the crowd's energy and not drown it out.

A library of 2,012 songs has been compiled with five music themes - energy, primetime, extreme, heritage and world stage - tailored to accompany specific sports and venues.

All venues will have presenters appearing on big screens to guide spectators through the action and 'interact' with the crowd.

At some venues, artists such as Scissor Sisters and Rizzle Kicks will play surprise gigs.

Ticket holders will also, in a Games first, be able to purchase in-ear wireless headsets, costing 10 pounds, for live commentary during the action at events that might otherwise be confusing or unfamiliar.

With a month to go before the start of the Games, Debbie Jevans, the director of sport for organisers LOCOG, assured reporters at the opening of the main press centre at the Olympic Park that the programme would respect the spectators and the integrity of the sports.

"Through the presenters that we have we will use them to work with the crowd and judge the atmosphere of the crowd and build up that atmosphere," she said.

"There has to be silence, but every sport is different."

EURO CRITICISM

Organisers of the Euro 2012 football tournament in Poland and Ukraine have drawn criticism for screeching presenters and thumping music drowning out crowd chants and the natural atmosphere of some games.

Spectators at the tournament have also been assigned cheerleaders exhorting them to sing along, while the traditional roar before kickoff has been replaced by a countdown led by an announcer that has alarmed traditionalists.

In some cases rock music has been played as soon as the ball hits the net.

Some Olympic sports that thrive on a youth vibe, such as beach volleyball, BMX cycling or basketball, may like to crank up the volume but not others that demand intense concentration and silence on the part of athletes.

That would include tennis, to be held at Wimbledon where straw hats and blazers are more common than ripped T-shirts and shorts, although that tournament will be deliberately different with the all-white code jettisoned and more of a buzz around it.

On-site entertainers could also come in useful if it rains, even if Centre Court now has a roof.

"If you look at Cliff Richard singing at Wimbledon all those years ago in the rain, we'll be reacting to the situation and working with the crowd and allow them to create the atmosphere as well," said Jevans.

"We will present sport and the game at Wimbledon in our own way, but what is sacrosanct is what goes on the field of play. You're not going to get music played in between points or when the athletes are changing ends.

"We will do some different things at Wimbledon but no way will it change the sport or the rules of that sport."

Specially-commissioned films will be shown before each session at venues, giving spectators an overview of the sport with action shots of former and current athletes and using graphics to explain the basic rules.

Athletes will be interview afterwards while the presenters will keep the crowd informed of key developments.

"A lot of this is pre, post and halftime stuff," said LOCOG chief executive Paul Deighton. "The majority of what we are talking about is book-ending.

"We are very sensitive to the sport itself... we will be really trying to identify which sports are more equivalent to Twenty20 (cricket)and which to a test match."

Rhode Island throws out decades-old law that made it a crime to fib online - Daily Mail

Rhode Island throws out decades-old law that made it a crime to fib online - Daily Mail

By Daily Mail Reporter and Associated Press

|

Rhode Island has repealed a bizarre law that made fibbing online a crime punishable by a $500 fine or a year behind bars.

The law covered all manner of white lies - from telling your mom how you love that ugly new sweater to emailing your spouse saying you were somewhere you weren't.

But the state's General Assembly has now voted to repeal the law, which has been in place since 1989.

'I'm working hard, honest': Rhode Island has repealed a law that made lying online a crime punishable by up to a year behind bars

'This law made virtually the entire population of Rhode Island a criminal,' Steven Brown, executive director of the Rhode Island American Civil Liberties Union, told The AP.

'When this bill was enacted nobody had any idea what its ramifications were. Telling fibs may be wrong, but it shouldn't be criminal activity.'

The law intended to stop fraud, con artists and scammers online.

But it was broader than that in other states, and outlawed the 'transmission of false data' whether or not people stood to profit from their lies.

The repeal of the law was partly prompted by a case in 2010, when a former prison guard set up a Facebook page in his boss's name.

Matthew LaCroix, 27, was suspended with pay, pleaded guilty to a charge of 'use of fraudulent information', and was fined $500.

Lawmakers: The state's General Assembly voted to throw out the law, which has been in place since 1989 and was intended to stop fraudsters

The charges were later dropped, but LaCroix lost his job.

His attorney, John Grasso, said his client's alleged actions 'may not be bright, but it shouldn't be illegal'.

'Everybody lies online,' Grasso said. 'You shouldn't be dragged into court and told that you can't tell people you're 6 feet tall when you're not.'

A handful of people have been prosecuted for lying online, but legislators said it made no sense to keep a law that is violated so often.

Rep. Chris Blazejewski, who proposed eliminating the law, said lying shouldn't make you a criminal unless you're trying to commit fraud or another offense.

'There are a lot of things we don't condone in our society that aren't crimes,' Blazejewski said. 'We take freedom of speech very seriously in this country and we should be concerned about the real and serious possibility of further erosion to our First Amendment civil liberties.'

But Jonathan Turley, a law professor at George Washington University, added that it was human nature to embellish and lie.

He went on: 'When you give the government the power to criminalize lies, you give it the power to determine what is true and what is false, and which lies to prosecute. That's a dangerous tool.'

Sussex metal thefts quadruple in two years - BBC News

Metal thefts in Sussex have almost quadrupled in two years, according to new figures released by police.

There were 1,748 cases reported in 2011 compared to 472 in 2009.

Now the majority of scrap metal dealers in the county have signed up to Operation Tornado, a national initiative to combat the problem.

Insp Martin Pattenden said: "Operation Tornado is one of a number of measures currently being explored to restrict the sale and movement of stolen metal."

He added: "It has been designed not to inhibit those dealers that operate legitimate businesses, but to remove unscrupulous dealers who operate outside the law."

Police said historically many thefts were from the railway system.

However, throughout 2011 criminals have been diversifying and targeting metal from other areas, including power cables, utilities pipe work, telecommunications cabling, residential properties, businesses and catalytic converters from vehicles.

'More difficult'

Under the new scheme, people will be required to provide proof of their identity including their current address and a photograph when trying to sell scrap metal to dealers.

The dealers will keep copies of all records for up to 12 months and make them available for inspection by police.

There are currently 47 licensed scrap metal dealers in Sussex, and more than 30 have so far signed up to Operation Tornado.

Insp Pattenden said: "We are hoping all registered scrap metal dealers will sign up to be involved to help fight the stolen metal trade and make it more difficult for thieves to make money by targeting our communities for metal.

"Those who do not sign up may now begin to find that they are receiving more attention from law enforcement."

Matt Lauer's wife 'will divorce him if Ann Curry's Today replacement is Natalie Morales' - Daily Mail
  • Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb said to be  next in line for top job
  • Ms Morales is reportedly 'not happy' at the likelihood that she may be passed over again

It may come down to which he values more - his marriage or the future of the Today show.

NBC host Matt Lauer's wife is said to have threatened him with divorce if newsreader Natalie Morales - who he is rumored to have had an affair with - takes Ann Curry's seat when her departure is announced at the end of the week.

Though Savannah Guthrie is the front-runner to replace Ann, it was reported today that Ms Morales said she will quit the Today show if she is bypassed as Lauer's co-anchor again.

'Walk-out': Natalie Morales on the Today show, left, is rumored to be threatening to quit if she doesn't get Ann's job, while Matt Lauer's wife Annette, both right, has threatened him with divorce if this happens

A source close to Lauer's wife Annette Roque told the The National Enquirer: 'When she heard about Ann getting the boot, the first thing she told Matt was that she didn't want him cozying up any closer to Natalie.

'In fact, Annette drew a line in the sand and said if he pushed show bosses to make Natalie his new co-host, she'd divorce him.

'Annette knows Matt is the key to the Today franchise and his bosses will put whoever he wants in the co-host chair.'

Ms Morales has been with Today since 2006 and was mentioned as a possible replacement for Meredith Vieira when she stepped down from her co-anchor post last year.

A source told the New York Post: 'This will be the second time [Ms Morales] has been passed over for the top job. And she’s not happy.'

A NBC Universal representative had no comment on Ms Curry or her replacement, but said the talk of Ms Morales, 40, being disgruntled was 'totally untrue'.

Coveted role: NBC's Hoda Kotb, right, is said to one of the frontrunners to take over from Ann Curry, left

Not working: Matt Lauer, right, allegedly claimed he and Ann Curry, left, have no chemistry since she took on Meredith Viera's role a year ago

Lauer, who is said to have signed a $25million deal earlier this year to stay with Today, was accused of having an affair with Ms Morales when they were covering the Winter Olympics in Italy in 2006.

Though he denied claims, they were enough to prompt a then-pregnant Annette to file for divorce - which she later withdrew.

However two years later, rumors abound that Lauer was the father of one of Ms Morales' children. She is married to Joe Rhodes and the couple have two children together.

Annette lives in the couple's $3.5million house in the Hamptons with their three children. Lauer only sees them at weekends.

Ms Curry, meanwhile, is expected to leave Today imminently, after a year on the job.

During her time as co-anchor, the programme’s ratings have dropped - falling below those of ABC rival Good Morning America at times.

NBC bosses are currently said to be locked in round-the-clock talks over the final details of Ms Curry’s exit.

The network has been negotiating with her over a severance package from her $10million-a-year contract.

Some insiders said the news could come as soon as today.

omg workplace drama!!!

Oh please just get rid of Matt and I will start watching the show!! he has got to GO!!!

How about cancelling the whole show.

Natalie Morales is about as sexy as a woman can be. I'd watch the show just to look at her. Hoda...no. Savanah is okay, very pretty but she's too liberal and too tall. I'm glad Ann Curry is going...hope NBC gives her a good job though. Problem with her was over the years it became very apparent that she was just another liberal who was almost smart enough to cover it up (I don't like libs). Got the job because she was a good trooper and adapted to the laws and culture of NBC. She (Ann) is very attractive but she lacks spark. Meridith was the best, other than Jane Pauley. How about Sarah Palin?? She would be outstanding and would keep Matt on his toes. What a shock that would be to liberal New Yorkers...but the rest of America would love it. Not to mention she is absolutely a beauty.

If Ann Curry leaves the Today so do I. They should get rid of Lauer, he is the most over rated person on TV....

Oh brother. I don't like Matt Lauer anyway. He and Natalie are both rather stiff; I would much rather see Hoda, and I do like Al Roker, but I'd rather not see the rest. But I don't watch TODAY anymore anyway. Too much fluff and not enough stuff, and they take themselves WAY too seriously.

She should have divorced his cheating Butt along time ago. He makes me sick and treats women poorly.

Lauer's wife looks like a hardcore harpy

Now that's true love...

Personally, I think Matt Lauer is a pompus a s s. If they got rid of him the ratings would go up.
